Memorial Day

Memorial Day
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (most recently observed May 29, 2006). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

Memorial Day 2004

Memorial Day 2004 Weekend Outbreak

The Memorial Day 2004 Weekend Tornado Outbreak lasted for two days from May 2930, 2004. This tornado outbreak began in the Great Plains and continued throughout the Midwest. The results from this outbreak are still being tabulated, but as of December 2004, the Storm Prediction Center has 199 tornado reports from the two days, but they have records for 149 actual tornadoes.

The 149 tornadoes occurred in 32 hours of continuous activity, which would not break the record held by the 1974 Super Outbreak, which saw 148 tornadoes in 18 hours. There was also a greater number of large and violent tornadoes in the Super Outbreak event.

So far, damage totals from this outbreak are at $62.321 million. The Storm Prediction Center will not have all results tabulated from this outbreak until the spring of 2005. Remarkably, only five people were killed.
